    Topquilt down basic:

The main difference compared to a sleeping bag is the lack of hood and back part. When we sleep on the ground, the down fill of the sleeping bag is compressed where contact is made with the sleeping pad, resulting in close to none insulation at those parts. In a topquilt, this part is missing, as keeping it would result in a useless weight penalty due to the underutilization of the down fill.

Instead of a hood, a draft collar and an elastic cord help seal the quilt around your neck, preventing heat loss. You can protect your head from the cold with a cap, scarf, buff, or balaclava among others.

The KHIBU MAGMA TOPQUILT is a down-filled blanket with a closed footbox that provides adequate insulation in colder seasons. The appropriately sized baffle chambers help to maximize the filling of the down. This down-filled portion (height/LOFT) will determine the comfort value of the quilt. The 15 partitioned baffle chambers, the differential cut, and the thermal bridge-free construction of the footbox ensure proper insulation. The part around the neck can be insulated with the huge draft collar and closed with an elastic cord. There are flat buckles on the side of the quilt, which connect to their matching pairs located on the added elastic strap. Using the elastic strap, the quilt can be comfortably fixed to the sleeping pad/mat at waist level so that despite turning and tossing around during the night, it stays in place, preventing heat loss due to unwanted drafts. Therefore, it can be used as easily on the ground, as in a hammock.

Differential cut: In addition to the baffle design, to utilize the proper space filling of the down is by providing enough space for that purpose. This is done by tailoring the outer shell larger than the inner shell so that the LOFT (filled part) is not compressed, should you create any tension to the shell from inside.

Baffle design: The inner and outer shell material are not sewn together at the edges of the chambers, but are connected by a special stripe of a defined width. Thanks to this technique, no thermal bridges are formed where insulation could be lost.

Elastic tensioner system (ETS): Along the edges of the quilt there is an elastic cord running. By using the elastic cord, the edges can be pulled closer to the user so that better thermal insulation is achieved, resulting in a higher comfort on colder nights. This way even when we move and turn around on the sleeping mat/pad, the unwanted drafts will be blocked.

FRAME: Materials used for the frame are ultra-lightweight 10D anti-tear RIPSTOP nylon fabrics. The inner side is calendered which makes the material down and wind resistant while maintaining proper air permeability at the same. The material is water repellent due to the DWR (durable water repellent) coating.

DOWN: Magma topquilts contain premium goose down. The quilts can be filled with a filling power of 800CUIN and 850CUIN down. CUIN (cubic inches/ounce) shows how much volume an ounce of down fills. The higher the number, the less amount is needed of it to achieve the same comfort rating.

    TOPQUILT BENEFITS:

    – ultralight

    – takes up very little space

    – outstanding insulating ability

much more comfortable, both on the ground and in a hammock, than a traditional sleeping bag

    DETERMINING THE COMFORT VALUE:

The warmth of a quilt depends on many things (baffle design, shape, fill power and amount of down, etc.), but is most easily determined by the height of the “LOFT” in the baffle chamber. These are approximate values as each person has different metabolism. So it is not set in stone, as the EN13537 standard is a guideline. It is important to wear appropriate, clean, dry clothing to achieve maximum insulation. Don’t sleep hungry and thirsty! Use the “bathroom” before going to bed.

The expected total weight may differ due to the use of different materials. In case of an individual custom order, the weight difference can be ± 5-8%.
